BFA

4-Year Program

The BFA track is designed to challenge conventional notions of image and art, encourage experimentation with materials and ideas, and build each artist’s sense of the context and personal importance of their work. The curriculum is distinguished by its commitment to an evolving suite of technical courses that address continuing shifts in image-making toolsets and theoretical coursework that interrogates the condition of the image, authorship and medium in a contemporary, local and globalized world.

Mentors and program faculty provide continuous guidance and collegial artistic advice throughout the BFA Program as students develop the musical skills and creative voice they need to excel as professional lens-based artists after finishing at CalArts.

In addition to fulfilling the requirements of the BFA Core Curriculum, BFA Photography and Media students are required to pass a Graduation Review in order to complete the Program.
