Gail Swanlund

Gail Swanlund
Gail Swanlund is a graphic designer and educator. Her creative work has been exhibited at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA), Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), CAM Raleigh, Pomona College, the Biennial of Graphic Design in Brno, Czech Republic, and elsewhere. Her work has been acquired by many public collections, including Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Merrill C. Berman Collection, SFMoMA and LACE. Her work has received numerous design honors and is featured in prominent design anthologies and magazines. 

Swanlund wrote and designed for the experimental and influential typography journal Emigre, and designed for the vanguard artist magazines Artpaper and RealLife. As co-founder of the award-winning design studio, STRIPE and current principal of Gailstudio, her clients have included cultural organizations REDCAT, BlackClock, Harlem Museum, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Southern California Institute of Architecture, ArtCenter and University of California; as well as commercial clients Ogilvy & Mather Brand Integration Group, Sony, Penguin Books and Chronicle Books. In addition to her graphic design, art making and writing practice, Swanlund has collaborated on numerous art works and artist monograph projects. 

In 2014, she joined the board of Design Inquiry, a non-profit educational collective whose mission is to cultivate the collective’s goal of cross-disciplinary discourse and research of design. 

Swanlund has lectured and taught workshops widely. During the academic year 2009–10, she was the Arts Council Professor and artist-in-residence in UCLA’s Design Media Arts program. As CalArts faculty, she teaches graphic design and typography, and co-teaches courses and workshops with faculty from other schools across the Institute.
