Some of Los Angeles’s most prominent contemporary artists will contribute work to the silent auction benefitting CalArts’s Community Arts Partnership (CAP).
Highlights include work by artists in the city-wide Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA exhibitions Barbara Carrasco and Sandy Rodriguez, acclaimed CalArts faculty artists Thomas Lawson and Sam Durant, and work by CAP students.
Valencia, CA, October 19—On Friday, November 10, Los Angeles artists pitch-in to support arts education for underserved youth. California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) announces the second annual silent art auction and cocktail party to benefit its Community Arts Partnership (CAP). Hosted by Susan Disney Lord, at her restaurant, The Bel-Air, the event takes place from 6:30 to 9 pm, and includes a special tribute to CAP’s Wallis Annenberg Artistic Director Glenna Avila. For 28 years, CAP has brought arts education, free of charge, to youth throughout Southern California. In 2009,
Olga Garay-English, then Executive Director of the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs called CAP “an ecosystem of pure joy that permeates through every level—teacher to student to parent to community.”
CAP’s “ecosystem of joy” is well represented by the over 60 works in the auction. Currently showing work in the city-wide Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA exhibitions are artists
Barbara Carrasco and
Sandy Rodriguez. Carrasco’s epic, and previously censored, mural “L.A. History: A Mexican Perspective 1981,” is on exhibit at Los Angeles’s Union Station. Rodriguez is included in the LA/LA group exhibitions
South of the Border at The Loft at Liz’s in Los Angeles and
Dark Progressivism: From Origin to the Post-Recession Modern Era at the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster. Also of note are artists
Monique Prieto who currently has work on view with the exhibition,
Luster at Chimento Contemporary in the Downtown Arts District and CalArts faculty member
Sam Durant who exhibits at Blum and Poe in Los Angeles and the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, among others. CAP students will add their work to the mix.

CAP offers after-school, summer, and school-based arts programs for youth ages 6-18—with many of its programs in high-need neighborhoods of Los Angeles County. The award-winning organization strategically partners with public schools and community organizations to provide opportunities primarily for underserved students to gain access to arts instruction. In 1990, CalArts established CAP, as the first program of its kind in the United States, linking CalArts to community-based organizations and public schools throughout Los Angeles County. Through CAP, CalArts faculty, alumni and students teach animation, creative writing, dance, film, music, photography and visual art to 2500 Los Angeles County youth every year through in-school, after-school and summer programs.
