Paul Brach Visiting Artist Lecture Series

Arash Kamali Sarvestani is an Iranian Dutch Filmmaker and Video Artist. He holds a BA in Cinema in Art from Art University of Tehran, and Video Art in Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Kamali Sarvestani graduated in 2013 and he has been living in The Netherlands since then. In 2017 he made “Chauka Please Tell Us The Time”. Arash came up with the idea of making a film from inside a refugee camp. He was curious to know if it is possible to make a movie about refugees using only mobile phone cameras inside a camp that looks more like a prison. After two years of investigation about refugees kept by the Australian government in Manus and Nauru camps Arash eventually found Behrouz Boochani who was detained in Manus camp. Arash shared the idea with Behrouz. The first feature movie of Arash “Chauka, Please tell us the time” is a result of their cooperation. During six month of making this film Arash and Behrouz have sent more than 10000 minutes of voice messages via Whatsapp to each other. "Chauka please tell us the time" had been nominated as the best documentary in BFI London Film Festival 2017 and also participated in many more festivals such as Goteborg FF, Sydney FF and Adelaide FF.

In 2019, he made “Tall Fences, Taller Trees” that has been selected in “Movies That Matter and Visions Du Reel”.

In 2021, Arash collaborated with Katarzyna Hejna, a Polish Journalist from Polish TV Channel TVN, and created “You Are Not Alone” regarding the current situation of LGBTQ community in Poland.
