Paul Brach Visiting Artist Lecture Series
Abby Chen is the Curator and Artistic Director for the Chinese Culture Foundation. She has more than 10 years of experience curating visual arts, film, and performing arts programs. She is responsible for the Foundation’s artistic vision, planning, and management, including exhibition, public art, collection, communication, publication, and strategic partnerships.
During her 7-year tenure, Abby helped to shape the CCF’s unique curatorial positioning, which highlights art making process, and provides channel to emerging and mid-career artists of Chinese descent living in the U.S. Under her leadership, the organization’s visual art programs have expanded in scope and breadth into an open yet focused platform that encourages imagination and risk-taking. Among the more than 50 exhibitions and programs curated by Abby at CCF and other institutions in both the U.S. and Asia have been important surveys in contemporary art and issues relevant to Chinese people and the world at large.
Some of her notable curatorial projects and partnerships include: Central Subway & Culture Mapping with San Francisco Arts Commission, Daily Lives for Yerba Buena Center For the Arts, Transnational Chinese Photographers and Games for the Hands and Mind: Chinese Puzzles at Museum of Chinese in America in New York, Pingyao International Photography Festival, WOMEN我們 with China NGOs, Fudan University, University of Michigan, Florida International University, and Rockbund Art Museum of Shanghai.
Abby holds an MA in Visual and Critical Studies from the California College of the Arts. Tri-lingual in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, she is a regular lecturer on contemporary Chinese art. Her writings were published on Yishu, Art China, Chinese Photography, Dong Fang Daily, and numerous catalogs. She was also the 2012 National Endowment for Humanity Summer Scholar.
